NAC for Respiratory Illness

We are in the middle of winter and cold and flu season on the Gulf Coast.

A supplement we like for everyone’s toolbox this time of year is N-acetyl-l-cysteine.

N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) is an amino acid that, among other things, protects the respiratory system from several different pathogens and diseases.

When excess mucus accumulates in the lungs, it can make breathing difficult. Doctors have been using NAC to reduce that mucus since the 1960s. NAC breaks down mucus secretions, making them less dense and sticky.

NAC has also been shown to reduce the number of harmful pathogens, including bacteria and viruses. Studies show NAC prevents bacteria from adhering to cell lining and airways, thereby making it hard for them to cause infection.

By preventing free-radical damage and reducing pathogen colonization, NAC decreases harmful inflammation, which contributes to the symptoms of most respiratory disorders.

Studies show that NAC reduces flare-ups of chronic bronchitis and COPD. It also protects the lungs from injury from pneumonia.

This winter season, considering taking NAC for all your respiratory needs. If you don’t want to swallow another pill, good news, we have watermelon flavored NAC powder for kids or adults.
