Theanine for Mental Calmness and Relaxation
Anxiety, being over-committed, having too much to do in too little time, with no time to relax, can contribute to prolonged stress.
Use of Theanine, an amino acid, is one very effective strategy that reduces feelings of anxiety and produces calmness that helps anyone feeling “stressed-out” to regain control.
Theanine exerts a profoundly relaxing, yet non-drowsy effect with noticeable effects within 15 minutes. It helps with stress, calms the nerves, improves mood, and even helps with learning and concentration. Best of all, it’s very safe and can be taken long term by everyone, from kids to seniors.
Theanine works in two important ways. First, by generating Alpha brain waves. The brain transmits four different types of brain waves that are determined by frequency: Gamma, Theta, Alpha, and Beta. Gamma waves are present during sound sleep. Theta waves indicate dozing or light sleep. In contrast, Beta waves are present during an awake, excited state, whereas Alpha waves indicate an awake, yet relaxed state.
Theanine is quickly absorbed through the small intestine and transported directly to the brain where it stimulates the generation of Alpha brain waves.
Secondly, researchers also suggest that theanine plays a role in increasing the formation of GABA, a neurotransmitter that is key to relaxation and memory.
Clinical studies have demonstrated that theanine reduces stress, improves quality of sleep, diminishes the symptoms of PMS, heightens mental acuity, and reduces the negative side effects of caffeine.
