What is the MTHFR Gene?
You may have seen the abbreviation MTHFR pop up in recent health news. It’s getting attention due to a genetic mutation that may lead to high levels of homocysteine in the blood and low levels of folate and other vitamins.
Its main function is to provide your body with instructions in creating the MTHFR protein, which helps your body produce folate. Folate, a B vitamin, is necessary to create DNA.
MTHFR variants (also called gene mutations) are inherited. The only way to know if you have this variant is through testing. However, testing generally isn’t recommended unless a person has a very high homocysteine level.
Having the MTHFR variant doesn’t mean you need medical treatment. It usually just means you need to take supplements that contain methylated folate.
At the Alternative Health Food Store, we offer two methylated supplements from Thorne.
Thorne B Complex #12 and Basic Nutrients 2/Day support energy production and healthy neurological function and contains the active forms of water-soluble B vitamins.
